A brief history of Spa 24H

The first Spa 24H event was held in 1924, just a year after the first 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The 15km route was mapped out through Malmedy, Francorchamps and Stavelot, taking drivers through beautiful undulating forests and attracted luxury sportscar manufacturers like Alfa Romeo, Bugatti and Mercedes.

Then the Second World War put a stop to the event for many years, and the original circuit was left in a state of disrepair. When Spa 24H returned permanently in 1964, the rules had changed - it featured GT cars only, with specific driving time requirements for professional and amateur racers.

Based in Stavelot, Belgium at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Spa 24 presents different challenges for drivers too. The weather is famously more unpredictable than other endurance races, while the Eau Rouge/Raidillon sequence is a tough section for drivers to navigate.

The rise of BMW

BMW was always a strong contender in the Spa 24, but the team really shone in the 1990s. In 1992, the M3 Sport Evo managed 513 laps with Steve Soper, Christian Danner and Jean-Michel Martin in the driving seat. The 1995 team of Peter Kox, Jo Winklehock and Steve Soper annihilated the competition with the 320i, managing 518 – a full nine laps more than second place!

Car No.5

This speedy race-winner was the long overdue third evolution of the E30, adapted to compete against Mercedes and Audi, who had both updated their touring cars.

Instead of using the 2302cc inline four-cylinder S14 engine that had served so well in the past, this car had a 2467cc unit with enlarged cylinder bores and longer strokes. There were larger camshafts, larger inlet and sodium-cooled exhaust valves and big exhaust manifolds.

The chassis was much improved too, made stronger, stiffer and thicker where necessary, while the fuel tank was made smaller, reduced from 70 litres to 62 litres. These measures all helped the M3 Sport Evo reach 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds, with top speeds of 154mph.

All this helped the super-styled car race into first place in the Spa 24H in 1992.

The 1992 race also holds an extra special memory for one of the drivers. Steve Soper committed to BMW to help lead the assault, but his wife at the time was heavily pregnant. She went into labour in the UK during the race.

Luckily Steve was able to do his opening stint, fly via helicopter for the birth of his daughter, and then fly back to Belgium to finish the race, and win!

Car No.8

By 1995, BMW had updated their race car to the 320i. This car featured improved control and reliability, with a more durable design that made it ideal for unpredictable endurance races. Advanced features allowed the driver to make adjustments during the race, helping to protect the tyres and fuel consumption.

Weighing a little less than the 1992 winner, this car was built to super touring regulations, with a sequential gearbox for quicker shifts.

This car outclassed every other racer on the tracks and cemented BMW’s legacy in the Spa 24H event.
