M-Sport knew it was risky letting a younger driver lead the team in the World Rally Championship, but Grégoire Munster surprised everyone in the 2025 event.
The year was full of changes for the team. Their star driver, Adrien Fourmaux left to join Hyundai, and the FIA paused the use of hybrid power on Rally1 cars. The reliable Ford Puma was updated in response, with improved engine mapping and new, shorter gear ratios that suited Munster’s driving style.
The team didn’t expect to make waves on the 2025 WRC stage but instead focused on gaining experience and learning lessons they could build on for 2026.

The season started on 23rd January in Monte Carlo, marking the 93rd edition of the special stages. Monte Carlo is one of the most challenging road rallies of the whole season, thanks to the Alpine terrain and variable weather conditions, and it’s the one that every driver dreams of winning. If you can master Monte Carlo, you have a real shot at the final trophy.
It’s a high-pressure event, but Munster had driven it before, so he had some experience to draw from. The European driver, son of rally legend Bernard Munster, went into the race without any pre-conceptions – just a quiet confidence that belied his speed potential.
He started out positively – one of the quickest drivers on the Friday, until a puncture hindered his progress. But he made up for that on the Saturday with a stage win, his first WRC stage win at Monte Carlo.
But Sunday brought drama, with the Puma slipping on black ice, despite the snow tyres in place. The car crashed into the side of the mountain and brought Munster’s race to an abrupt halt.
His WRC competition continued at other events over the season, however, and he really made his mark at the Safari Rally Kenya. The 26-year-old racer definitely brought some high-octane entertainment to the event, with onlookers rooting for the underdog with every twist, turn and long straight he encountered.
