The 24 Hours of Le Mans is the most important event on the racing calendar, with every professional driver dreaming of a place on the winner’s podium. As the oldest, most challenging endurance race in the world, it is a true test of skill and engineering.

Porsche have always been a formidable presence at Le Mans, scoring 19 number one victories – more than any other manufacturer. So, when they unveiled the Porsche 963 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2022, the racing world took notice.

Built by the Porsche Penske Motorsport team, this was a hypercar designed to dominate endurance races. Continuing the legacy of race-winning models like the 917, 935 and 962, the car made its debut at the 2023 24 Hours of Daytona. While it didn’t place highly in this event, Porsche were able to adapt and improve the car so that it made a bigger mark at other events in the endurance season.

And when the Porsche 963 returned to Daytona in 2024, with drivers Matt Campbell, Felipe Nasr, Dane Cameron and Josef Newgarden, it stole the show and took the number one spot. It found further success in the IMSA series, with four wins out of nine, as well as wins in Imola, Spa-Francorchamps, Sao Paulo and Sakhir.

But Le Mans was the one that got away in 2024.

The Porsche 963 at Le Mans 2024

Everything was going smoothly, setting Porsche up for a prosperous run at Le Mans 2024. Car No.6, the hero of our story, earned pole position, with Kévin Estre behind the wheel, but three Porsche 963s entered in total.

When the race began, at 4pm on 15th June, Laurens Vanthoor took No.6 to second place. But when the rain started, and the wrong tyres were selected in a pit stop, Porsche lost important time, which Ferrari took advantage of. But the Porsche drivers, including André Lotterer, steadily worked their way back up the rankings, sitting in second place again for the majority of the race.

But in the end, No.6 took fourth place, although it still led the way ahead of all the other Porsches. This is still an impressive result in an event where simply seeing the chequered flag is an achievement. The Porsche 963 survived the heavy rains and the challenging course, competing against some of the most accomplished hypercars in the world to reach the finish line.

The Porsche 963 showed incredible reliability and endurance potential, giving Porsche the confidence to set their sights on the 2025 season.
