If your slot car skills leave a lot to be desired, then it’s time to boost your racing game. Read on to discover our top tips for racing success, to help you win races with style.

The metal contacts underneath your car hold the key to unlocking your true race potential. Check them regularly to ensure they are parallel with each other and pointing towards the back of the car.
You should also give them a quick clean after every race. Use a toothbrush to remove any dirt that may otherwise interfere with your slot car’s connectivity. If your braids are looking worn out or frayed, it could be time to replace them.
Give the track rails a quick wipe down with a damp microfibre cloth at the same time to increase your chances of race success.

Your slot car tyres are just as important as your braids – both are fundamental when it comes to hitting those top speeds and keeping your slot car on the tracks.
The best way to clean the tyres is with sticky tape. Press a strip of tape onto the tyres and spin the wheels to lift away any dust or debris. And if the tyres are looking cracked or worn out, you’ll need to replace them.

You’ll be surprised at how much difference a drop of specialist slot car oil can make. Add a small amount to your gears and axles to keep them running smoothly.
To get to the gears, you’ll need to unscrew the body from the chassis. While you’re there, make sure all the axles are straight for perfect alignment.
Adding weight to your car can improve traction, helping it to cling to the tracks even when moving at top speeds. But it only works when everything else is running properly – don’t try to add weight before checking all the above points first.
Where you place the weight matters too. Start by securing small weights with Blu Tack so you can experiment with different placements. Every car and driving style is different, so there's no one-size-fits-all solution. Just make sure the car stays balanced from left to right.
If adding weight isn’t an option, practise with a heavier slot car instead. This will help you learn to control your car before moving on to lighter designs and mastering the art of slot car racing.

This one is all about practice. You need to get good at accelerating and braking smoothly, especially around corners, and that will only come from spending time playing with your slot cars.
The more you practice, the more you’ll learn about how different cars handle on different parts of your track. It’s a good idea to start with one car and master how that one moves on your layout, before testing out different models. They all have their own quirks, which will affect your chances of winning each race.
Remember, it’s as much about control as it is about speed. Slow down before corners and accelerate out of them – holding the trigger as hard as you can all the way round is sure to result in spinning off the track.
Once you’ve got the hang of it, keep testing and refining. Note your lap times and see which parts of the set-up are slowing you down. Small tweaks to your driving technique can have surprising results.
If you follow these tips, you’ll be crossing the finish line faster, and with more control, than ever before.
