Four reasons why the FAB-1 is the most iconic TV car
Someone like Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward could never be seen in any ordinary car. The international aristocrat, socialite, model and International Rescue agent needed something that looked good to match her impeccable public image, but it also needed to be filled with cool gadgets that would help take down villains and keep her safe.
Enter the FAB-1, a pink Rolls Royce equipped with more spy gadgets than you could shake a sniper rifle at! There are many reasons why the FAB-1 is such an iconic TV screenstar, and since it is Thunderbirds Day on the 30th September, now seemed like a great time to take a look at them.
Gadgets galore!
The gadget arsenal included:
· two grill machine cannons, one on each side of the front grill, stored behind the headlights
· rear-mounted machine guns
· smoke and oil release from the back of the car
· harpoons to help pull heavy items or break down doors
· a boot elevator platform that rose out of the back of the car to help Lady Penelope reach great heights
· down and under doors and a rising canopy to make it easy to get in and out of the car
· a megaphone!
A super-high top speed!
The Fab-1 could reach speeds of 300mph, making for some great chase and getaway scenes.
Transforming abilities!
Most of the time, the FAB-1 is a respectable pink car that travels around town as normal. But in times of need, the Rolls Royce can become aquatic and even fly! There’s no hope of escape for any villains, no matter how they might be travelling.
Instantly recognisable design
A Rolls Royce is an impressive sight on its own but add the bright pink colour and suddenly you have a vehicle that looks like no other car you’ve ever seen before.
A closer look at the Scalextric FAB-1
When it came to replicating this iconic vehicle for the Scalextric track, we knew there would have to be some compromises. We just didn’t have the capacity to add oil slicks, harpoons and cannons to the 1:32 scale slot car, and we didn’t think they would be a helpful addition to your racetrack anyway!
What we did manage, however, is something pretty great. Our FAB-1 slot car is the first to have six wheels (with rubber tyres) and it includes Lady Penelope and her driver, Parker in the seats of the car. The attention to detail is incredible, as you’ll notice as soon as you open your box, and there are working lights on the front and back of the car, which fade in the exact same way as you will have seen on the TV show.
With all that in mind, this is a great model to celebrate Thunderbirds Day. Can any other slot car ever hope to beat this phenomenal model? The only way to find out is to line-up your cars on the starting grid. Ready, set, Thunderbirds are GO!
