Gordon Murray racing cars immortalised in Scalextric form

The Scalextric Gordon Murray Design Genius - Twin Car Pack celebrates a true legend of the racing world. Making his name at Brabham, before moving to McLaren and then setting up the Gordon Murray Design consultancy, Gordon made the cars that won races.

The story of Gordon Murray’s racing cars

Born in 1946 in South Africa, young Gordon had dreams of working for Lotus and he moved to England in 1969 to pursue that goal. Instead, he secured a role at Brabham, becoming Chief Designer when Bernie Ecclestone took over in 1973.

The cars he created were almost unbeatable, with Brabham scoring 22 Grand Prix wins between 1973 and 1985. One of the cars he built, presented in the Scalextric collectible set, was the Brabham BT46B, also known as the ‘fan car’.

The BT46B was debuted at the 1978 Swedish Grand Prix. It used a fan to increase cooling, but it also provided a significant amount of downforce, increasing grip and allowing the driver to speed around corners more quickly.

The fan was considered race-legal because it assisted cooling, but after protests from competitors, who thought the fan gave the car an unfair advantage, it was banned from F1 by the Commission Sportive Internationale.

Gordon didn’t give up on his idea of a fan-assisted race car, however, and revisited the concept in 2020. The GMA T.50 is the second slot car represented in our twin pack, combining the style of the McLaren F1 with the engineering of the Brabham BT46B. However, this is a road-legal hypercar, rather than an F1 rule-breaker, so it’s been made with the idea of offering the most incredible driving experience, rather than winning races.
