The Mustang has enjoyed a successful racing heritage since 1964, appearing in the Tour de France, the IMSA GTP series and 24 Hours of Le Mans.

It was at Le Mans that the Ford Mustang GT3 was first unveiled to the racing world in 2023, as part of the event’s 100th anniversary celebrations. It then made its racing debut at 24 Hours of Daytona 2024, which is the where the story of our newest slot car began.

24 hours of Daytona

The 12-turn, 3.56-mile (5.73km) course at Daytona International Speedway is the perfect host for 24 Hours of Daytona (also known as the Rolex 24 at Daytona). Situated at Daytona Beach in Florida, the combined road course puts professional and amateur racers to the test, with its high-speed track lengths and oval bends.

Of course, the trickiest part of this endurance event is fighting against the fatigue that drivers will inevitably experience. Maintaining high speeds for 24 hours, while making strategic decisions in potentially extreme weather conditions, is no mean feat and so drivers must be in peak condition to compete.

The Ford Mustang GT3 debut

The Mustang didn’t exactly set the racetrack alight with its debut event, with the Multimatic Motorsports team using 24 hours of Daytona as a learning experience.

In fact, car 64 started near the back on the starting grid after a poor qualifying performance. It managed a comfortable 726 laps in 24 hours, coming 31st overall and 6th in the GTD Pro Class. Drivers Christopher Mies, Mike Rockenfeller and Harry Tincknell took their time to get to grips with the race car, seeing how it moved round the challenging course and took the long straights in its stride.

Despite the result, the Mustang still brought excitement to the track, as a new entry in the GT3 racing class. It was a handsome vehicle, exuding the iconic Mustang style, with impressive technical specifications and a 5.4l naturally aspirated Coyote V8 engine. Details like the Bosch Motorsport MS6.4 engine control unit, the dry sump oiling system and carbon propshaft meant that the car had everything it needed to be a race-winner.

In fact, when car 64 took to the Daytona course again in 2025, with drivers Seb Priaulx, Mike Rockenfeller and Austin Cindric each taking their turn behind the wheel, it came third in its class. Meanwhile, car 65 finished at the top of the GTD Pro rankings, making this a much more successful year for Mustang.

Could 2026 bring the Mustang GT3 the top podium place it deserves?
