When François Delecour roared onto the starting grid of the 1991 Monte Carlo Rally, nobody expected the rookie driver and his Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth to make much of an impact on the stages. But on the second day of the event, crowds were treated to a head-to-head battle between Delecour and reigning WRC champion Carlos Sainz Sr. Delecour came so close to success, and the race went down in history.

The Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth – a rally legend

Ford had already had some rally success with the Escort and the GT40, but those cars had served their purpose by the 90s, and it was time for something new.

The Ford Sierra RS Cosworth was an instant hit when it was launched in 1985. While Ford predicted sales of around 1,500, it went on to sell over 5,500.

For the mass market, Ford created the Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth – a four-door option that was made to appeal to everyone. It became an instant icon and was actually far more effective on the rally stage too.

When François Delecour stepped into his blue and gold-liveried No.12 car in 1991, he took the vehicle to superstar status.

François Delecour’s breakthrough moment

The 1991 Monte Carlo rally was mostly dominated by Lancias and Toyotas, but Delecour got his first taste of the winner’s podium in the Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth.

At one point, it looked as though he might even beat Carlos Sainz Sr, moving into the lead at the end of the final day. And then disaster struck, just a few minutes from the finish line.

The Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth ran off the road. The suspension was damaged, and the tyres were punctured. Delecour climbed out of the car with his dreams of winning, shattered.

Despite this, he managed to claim third place in the event and went on to find great racing success with Ford in future events. Sainz Sr won comfortably – a full four minutes and 59 seconds ahead of second place.

Now that François Delecour’s car has been recreated in slot form, you can replay the event on your home layout but give the Frenchman the win he deserved.
