The DeLorean time machine was undoubtedly the biggest star of the Back to the Future trilogy. With its unusual design, futuristic capabilities and the obvious affection the characters of the movies gave it, it has become an icon – instantly recognisable to all.

The Back to the Future franchise is not just a few movies; it's a cultural phenomenon and its iconic DeLorean time machine is now an essential part of the Scalextric collection. Here’s a look at the DeLorean's movie history and how Scalextric brought it to life on your tracks.

A little bit about the on-screen time machine

There were seven cars used in the three films, each one with its own dedicated role. The original DeLorean was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, who also designed James Bond’s Lotus Esprit. It was chosen as the Back to the Future time machine due to its futuristic, flying-saucer looks.

The original V6 engine didn’t quite have the impact that producers wanted on screen, so the sound effects team replaced it with the engine from a Porsche 911. And, at the time, the law in America didn’t allow speedometers to read over 85mph. Of course, the DeLorean needed to hit 88mph, so they adjusted the speedometer to read faster than the car was actually going.

Have you discovered the Scalextric Back to the Future models yet?

Each DeLorean model has been crafted with careful attention to detail, from the working lights to the digital plug-ready features, ensuring fans can enjoy a racing experience that mirrors the movies’ magic.

Here’s a rundown of our BTTF models.

DeLorean Back to the Future

Released in 2020 as a brand-new tooling, this design included working lights, an easy change guide, magnatraction and a Marty figure in the driving seat. In 1:32 scale, it was digital plug ready and was introduced along with a new film and TV category.

Taking inspiration from key scenes in the movie, the Scalextric model included the lightning-attracting metal hook on the back and the iconic OUTATIME numberplate. This car was incredibly popular upon release and sold out in record time.

DeLorean Back to the Future Part 2

The untrained eye might not notice much difference between the first Scalextric DeLorean and the second one. But once you start examining it, the differences jump out left, right and centre!

The biggest difference is the addition of the Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor – Doc had to create this when he was stuck in a time where gasoline had not yet been invented. And, of course, there's no lightning rod conductor on this model. But you’ll still find Marty in the driver’s seat, ready to take this slot car Back to the Future!

This model is currently available to buy on our website.

Back to the Future Part 3 Time Machine

The latest incarnation of the Back to the Future time machine features white-walled tyres that can run on rails and the time circuit box on the bonnet. It still has the Mr Fusion Reactor and a tow bar on the front, just like in the film. And of course, Marty is still in the front seat.

As the final model in the trilogy, this DeLorean is a must-have for anyone who managed to get their hands on the first two models. Which one goes fastest? It should be quite an even race considering they all have a top speed of 88mph!

Whether you’re a long-time collector or new to Scalextric, these DeLorean models offer a unique blend of movie nostalgia and racing excitement. Have you collected all of our Back to the Future cars? Which one is your favourite?
